In the village of Rasinari whoever dares to make the mountain excursion coming the climatic winding road from Patinis, will find at its base the beauty of this colourful village, pieced together by the character of its inhabitants and their myths and legends .
At the base of the mountain you will see flocks of sheep and their shepherds but could it be these very shepherds who are related to the one which has become legendary in the region?
An old shepherd and his wife were suspected of having stolen the village’s treasure. The poverty of the village was blamed on this wrongdoing of theirs and they were bad-mouthed and banished. They never left their hut but one day the wife went to get water for her polenta. She dropped her pot and to her luck, it did not crack but it did mutter the word “Stribei” when it fell. She went home and told her husband about this but he did not believe her.
With gossip spreading about all of their hidden treasure, news got out to the chief of the thieves who was named “Sirbeiu”. He sent his five best thieves one night to rob the elderly shepherd and his wife. They rode on their horses all night and arrived at the break of dusk, they crept peering through the window to watch what the old man was doing.
The old shepherd woke up from his sleep and put logs on the fire, when he sat in his chair to tie his shoes he laughed to himself and said “thank God I tied the first five, now I have five left to tie up until I put the Sirbeiu on fire”. He was referring to the pot which he called Sirbeiu after his wife had told him the story about it. Since the thieves had no way of knowing this they became petrified that he knew how many of them there were and their chief, they realized this man was no joke and ran away for their lives.
That day without even realizing it, the elderly shepherd and his wife spent their days peacefully in Rasinari. No one is quite sure where their house is located but they all know that journeying down the mountain to see this village will surely repay their efforts.
Call it divine intervention but there’s something that leaves you feeling safe here like the land is protecting you just as it did to the elderly man and his wife! And if you're wondering how to get to Rasinari and explore the magic of this village you can find all of that information right here.
